It's Never Too Late to be Great

It's never too late to be great. As you may know already, debt messes with almost every area of our lives. It causes stress that leads to bad health and broken relationships with spouses, kids, friends and family members. I have learned over time that debt has become the product of what I consider is "the social disease of our generation." I'll call it the "Now Syndrome". We are all obsessed with wanting things now and we will go to any extent to get it, not even realizing what the repercussions will be. It boils down to our lust and greed for more. One day while I was speaking to a group of investors, I had an idea to loan money to credit-challenged people for online purchases. One of the investors stood up and said, "Awesome idea. Anything that gets America further in debt will take off." The bottom line is America is a servant to money.

We will lie to ourselves over and over until we get what we want and then suffer the consequences of our actions, while indirectly making so many others suffer along with us. We'll tell ourselves how we will save money by buying a new car, or new place to live. We will convince ourselves how we can fit that new toy into our budget. We'll shop for clothes or things to adorn ourselves knowing damn well that we can't afford it. We'll say things like, "I deserve it" or "I don't want my kids to be without." The fact of the matter is we want what other "happy people/families" have. Well, other "happy people/families" also have DEBT. When are we going to realize that things are so temporary? Our true happiness does not lie in what we possess or what we look like or even what our kids possess.

During the Christmas holidays, get tough with yourself and refuse to get further in debt. Refuse credit card spending, payday loans, cash advances, short term loans, advances on your paycheck or any other form of borrowing. Our own family has made some cutbacks on spending due to the development of our new company. My wife and I both agreed that our kids have plenty. We have so much to be grateful for; we don't need to be spending more on things that just won't satisfy the soul.

My sincerest goal is to open your eye to the truth. There is a great biblical passage that says, "The truth shall set you free." We can be in debt to our ears and discover why we are in debt, and what got us to this point and then have a plan to get us out. Those truths alone could give us such freedom and peace of mind. One of the richest men of past generations was Howard Hughes. They asked him the question, "How much money does it take to make a man happy?" His response was, "Just a little bit more." He died a sorry death and very unhappy. Greatness will never come by what we possess and you will never achieve greatness by being in debt. It's never too late to be great.

Debt is selfish, it not only affects you but those you surround yourself with.
Debt can be an obsession—wanting more without ever counting the cost.
Debt is about our lust and greed for more.
America is a servant to debt / money.
We will lie to ourselves about making purchases we can't afford.
Happiness doesn't lie in what we possess.
Discovering the truth about our debt will set us free.
Getting further in debt during the holidays will keep us in debt for the rest of the year.
